Walk Against Poverty

Building Futures Together’s 9th Annual Walk Against Poverty, Saturday, September 20, 2008, at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Jamaica, New York.  Building Futures Together is looking for Foot Soldiers to battle and stomp poverty out of existence. Join  the 3.1 mile walkathon at Flushing Meadows and raise awareness and raise funds.  The funds raised will go to the organization’s  3-prong programs of help and hope:  livelihood, education and health management.  In the past, the organization was able to raise funds to send mothers to a sewing school and set up a sewing center where the mothers are now income earners for their families. The organization has also successfully launched its literacy programs, concentrating on providing relevant books and other educational materials, including computers to set up 29 basic  libraries in as many barrios in the provinces of Samar. The goal is to set up a basic library in every barrio in the provinces of Samar – over 2,000!

Please register as a Foot Soldier by clicking on the link to the registration form.  A registration fee of $20 is required of every foot soldier.

2008 Book Drive

Building Futures Together has launched a book drive to collect relevant books to help its literacy program in the Provinces of Samar Island.   The plan is to raise enough books and other educational materials including working computers,  to ship a 20-ft container to the provinces.

This is the second book drive organized by the organization. The first book drive resulted in allowing 29 schools to set up basic libraries in as many barrios in these provinces.  The goal is the have a basic library in the 2,000+ schools and barrios.

The response this year was extremely overwhelming to the point that Building Futures Together has begun to appeal for volunteers to help pack and  pick up books and take them to storage and appealed to individuals with vans or trucks to pick up the books as well.

The outpouring of support from schools, libraries and individuals with boxes and boxes of books, sometimes enough to fill a 16ft U-Haul truck at one pick up,  have forced Building Futures Together to seek donations from individuals and corporations to help underwrite the cost of storage and also of the shipment of the 20ft container to the Philippines.

If you want to volunteer to pack and pick up books; if you want to help underwrite the cost of storage and shipping, please click on “Contribute”.
