Poverty:
The
12th Walk Against Poverty, an annual fund-raiser by Building Futures Together (“BFT”),
takes place on Saturday, September 17, 2011.
The 5K (3.5mile) Walk will be in Manhattan for the first time – on Central
Park West! Assembly and registration of Foot Soldiers (walkers) will be on the
east side of Central Park West on 61st Street.
Registration starts at 9:00a.m. and the Walk begins at 10:00a.m. There is a
registration fee of $20 for each Foot Soldier (walker) which is not tax
deductible.
Foot Soldiers (walkers) are encouraged early on, way before the Walk, to
begin to seek pledges or donations from friends, family and colleagues. Form a
team of 3-4 and have them do the same. Ask your supporters to be generous (their
pledges/donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law)
The Walk’s purpose is to raise awareness that poverty is the most vile
illness inflicting the provinces of Samar Island, long considered one of the
poorest if not the poorest provinces in the Philippines; they are the designated
beneficiaries of this Walk Against Poverty.
BFT runs a three-prong, interlinking community based programs: livelihood,
health management and education/environment, applied simultaneously, one
community at a time to battle conditions and problems of poverty that exists NOW
and continues as an ongoing crisis.
Funds raised from this 12th Walk will go toward a livelihood project and
obtaining a mobile medical unit.
Building Futures Together is a NYS registered, IRS recognized 501(c)3
charitable organization devoted entirely to fighting and eradicating poverty in
the Philippines, starting in the provinces of Samar Island.
| Over
the years Building Futures Together has established over 60 mini
libraries in as many communities in the three provinces of Samar
Island; built 2-classrooms with a toilet (San Joaquin High School);
taught mothers to sew and set up a sewing center with 4 industrial
sewing machines where these mothers and anyone who wants to learn and
earn might simply do so ; built an outdoor staircase to connect small
school children to their school (the community is atop a mountain and
the school at the very bottom and children had no way to navigate to
and from school except by sliding, walking down); etc. |
